The Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure-stream faculty position in Health Policy Studies, at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning January 1, 2021, or shortly thereafter.

The successful candidate will have disciplinary depth and an interest in working in a collaborative and multidisciplinary environment. Applicants must demonstrate expert knowledge of health policy and health systems issues in the Canadian context, as well as expertise in a body of theoretical work with relevance to health policy studies (e.g., public administration, political sociology, public policy studies, medical sociology, etc.). The position is open with respect to substantive focus in health policy (e.g., healthcare policy, public health policy, health technology policy, health-in-all policy). The successful candidate will have the demonstrated expertise in comparative health systems and health policy research.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in a field related to Health Policy Studies, including but not limited to Political Science, Political Sociology or Public Administration, by the appointment date, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and a commitment to excellence in teaching. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to collegial service and an interest in collaboration, including with those outside their discipline.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence as demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments and innovations, the teaching dossier, including a teaching statement, teaching evaluations, and sample course materials, as well as strong letters of reference.

The successful applicant will contribute to the Institute’s graduate educational programs, notably the emphasis in Health Policy within the MSc/PhD concentration in Health Services Research, as well as other research and professional programs; the candidate may also have the opportunity to be involved with undergraduate teaching. The successful applicant will be expected to teach introductory and upper-level courses, including courses such as Canada’s Health Systems, Health Policy Comprehensives, and Comparative Health Systems.

Responsibilities will include research, teaching and supervision at the graduate level, and taking an active role in the life of the Institute. The new faculty member will be expected to: establish and maintain a strong, active, robust, independent, innovative, externally-funded research program at the highest international level; take an active role in teaching and mentoring students; collaborate with colleagues and other university departments, partners, and the community; and be committed to equity, diversity and inclusion.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The selected candidate will be eligible to participate in an internal competition for a subsequent Canada Research Chair nomination.

With its secretariat located at IHPME, the North American Observatory on Health Systems and Policies (NAO) conducts comparative health systems and policy research in Canada, the United States and Mexico with a focus on subnational jurisdictions. Working with numerous health system governments and stakeholders, the NAO employs a number of IHPME doctoral students in the Health Services Research concentration.

The Institute is located within the Dalla Lana School of Public Health (DLSPH). This School was founded in 1927 and has grown to be the largest and most productive cluster of public health scholars in Canada.
